Las Vegas Raiders NFL Combine Preview: Quarterbacks
The Las Vegas Raiders are getting ready to partake in the scouting events at the 2023 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Starting this week, prospects will arrive early to complete their exams and have time to speak to clubs in team meetings before participating in drills.
A total of 15 of the 319 prospects taking part in the combine will be quarterbacks.
The combine will bring in the top NFL quarterback prospects and give the Raiders a final look at the group before showcasing their skills individually at their Pro Days.
It will also provide a closer look at these prospects before deciding against holding back or signing a free agent quarterback before the draft.
The Raiders hold the seventh overall selection in this year’s draft and could use that pick on a quarterback.
There are other options on day two and even day three of the draft if they decide to go a different route.
The list of potential starters taking part in the combine are listed below:
- Will Levis, Kentucky
- Bryce Young, Alabama
- Anthony Richardson, Florida
- C.J. Stroud, Ohio State
- Tanner McKee, Stanford
All of these prospects have the potential to start at quarterback for the Raiders on day one.
Whether the Raiders would pull the trigger on one of these prospects with their seventh overall pick, some would have to "wow" the scouts during the draft process.
Something to look at here is whether the Raiders fall in love with someone during the interview process and they later separate themselves from the rest of the pack.
The rest of the prospects could fall as potential back-ups or future starters:
- Jake Haener, Fresno State
- Hendon Hooker, Tennessee
- Dorian Thompson-Robinson, UCLA
- Clayton Tune, Houston
- Aidan O'Connell, Purdue
- Jaren Hall, BYU
- Tyson Bagent, Shepherd
- Stetson Bennett, Georgia
- Malik Cunningham, Louisville
- Max Duggan, TCU
This group of prospects had extraordinary success in their college careers but either lacked accuracy or decision-making compared to the first list of prospects.
These players can eventually have an opportunity to start, but unfortunately, the Raiders need a quarterback and have little time to develop him.
That doesn't mean the Raiders can shy away from drafting one of these quarterbacks with one of their later picks.
The quarterbacks will participate in drills on Saturday, March 4, at 10 a.m. PST, along with wide receivers and tight ends.
The NFL Draft will occur at Union Station in Kansas City, Mo., from Thursday, April 27 to Saturday, April 29. ESPN, ABC, and NFL Network will broadcast all seven rounds.
The NFL Scouting Combine is Feb. 28-March 6, 2023, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. March 7, 2023, before 4 p.m. EST, is the club's deadline to designate Franchise or Transition Players.
March 13-15 is the free agent negotiation period. Starting at 12 p.m. EDT on March 13 and ending at 3:59:59 p.m. EDT on March 15, clubs are permitted to contact and enter into contract negotiations with the certified agents of players who will become Unrestricted Free Agents upon the expiration of their 2022 Player Contracts at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15.
The 2023 NFL Year and Free Agency period begins at 4 p.m. EDT on March 15. The Raiders are expected to be significant players in the free-agent market this season.
