Seahawks Targeting Former Washington Coach For Offensive Coordinator Job: Report
The Seattle Seahawks have finally found their new head coach in Mike Macdonald, so the next order of business is filling out his coaching staff.
For a defensive coach like Macdonald, offensive coordinator may be the single most-important position on the staff to nail. It remains to be seen who the Seahawks will interview for the job, but if a recent report is accurate, Seattle fans should be very familiar with one of the candidates.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Seahawks are considering former Washington Huskies and current Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb for their opening at the same position.
Grubb has never coached at the NFL level, but he has quickly risen through the college ranks. The 47-year-old spent the past two seasons at Washington and worked his magic on the offense, as the Huskies finished 25-3 over that time while boasting one of the best offenses in the nation. Washington finished first in passing offense and second in total offense in 2022, then second in passing offense and 13th in total offense in 2023.
Grubb's time with the Huskies came to an abrupt end last month, as he went to Alabama alongside head coach Kalen DeBoer, whom he has worked with since 2007. The fact that Grubb just took another job across the country, as well as his loyalty to DeBoer, could preclude him in the Seahawks' search, but such a move isn't entirely unprecedented.
Former Arizona Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury previously did something very similar. Kingsbury, who had just been fired at Texas Tech, accepted a job as USC's offensive coordinator in December 2018, but then left to become the Cardinals' coach the next month. Granted, that situation involved an NFL head coaching job rather than a coordinator role, but still, there is precedent.
Huskies fans may still have a sour taste in their mouth over Grubb leaving, but if he were to come back to the Emerald City and join the Seahawks, they may be able to forgive him somewhat.
