Seahawks Salary Cap Update: How Much Room Did Seattle Gain?

The Seattle Seahawks kept themselves busy off the field even with training camp starting, as they freed up additional cap space with a pair of moves.

Even with the start of training camp on Thursday, the Seattle Seahawks were kept busy off the field as general manager John Schneider successfully gained the team more financial breathing room with just two moves.

Days prior to the start of camp, the Seahawks were able to sign linebacker Uchenna Nwosu to a contract extension. Getting Nwosu an extended deal was on the offseason to-do list for the Seahawks, as he entered the final year of his two-year contract that he signed last offseason.

After not quite living up to expectations during his rookie contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, Nwosu signed with the Seahawks and went on to finish tied for first in sacks on the team with Darrell Taylor at 9.5.

Thanks to the savviness of Schneider, Nwosu will be paid like a top-10 edge rusher in Seattle through the 2026 season, netting $32 million in guaranteed money out of a possible $59 million.

Yet, the benefits are mutual: Nwosu will get paid, and the Seahawks save money. According to projections from OverTheCap, the extension nets Seattle a little over $5.3 million in cap space.

Schneider and Co. didn't stop with an extension for Nwosu, as they also pulled a financial lever in the form of restructuring the contract of star safety Quandre Diggs. Thanks to the restructuring of Diggs, the Seahawks managed another $6 million in space, which adds up to a little over $11 million in cap room.

While it isn't uncommon for teams to want a certain number in space reserved heading into the season, which could be the case with the Seahawks, they could also be opening up room to make another free agent signing.
