Areas of Need for the Pittsburgh Steelers After Signing WR Allen Robinson & LB Tanner Muse

After a 9-8 season and missing the playoffs for the first time in three seasons, the Steelers focused heavily on their offensive line, defensive line and secondary in free agency. They brought in quite a few veterans like Larry Ogunjobi, Patrick Peterson, Isaac Seumalo, Cole Holcomb, Keanu Neal, Damontae Kazee and others to help shore up their defense. Despite adding these vets to a nice core of players like T.J. Watt, Cameron Heyward, Minkah Fitzpatrick and more, the Steelers can still benefit greatly from adding a young, elite piece to their defense.

On the offensive side of the ball, the biggest need is undoubtedly on the offensive line. Despite adding Seumalo from the cross-state rival Philadelphia Eagles, the Steelers feature a patchwork offensive line, and with second-year quarterback and 2022 first round pick Kenny Pickett, plus skill-position pieces like Diontae Johnson, Najee Harris, George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth, the necessity to protect up front so Pickett can get the ball to these playmakers is paramount.

The Steelers also brought in veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson in a seventh-round pick swap with the Rams and with the Steelers paying just shy of $4 million for his 2023, it's a solid bargain for a player to caught 100 balls just three seasons ago. His last two seasons have dropped off precipitously and Robinson may not be the player he once was, but he's still a solid depth piece for a young offense looking to improve as a unit.

First Pick Predictions for the Pittsburgh Steelers Selecting 17th Overall

The Steelers have finished .500 or better in each of head coach Mike Tomlin’s 16 seasons at the helm, which is an amazing feat. Even more so, considering his quarterbacks were first-round bust Mitch Trubisky and rookie Kenny Pickett in 2022. There’s no question it’s Pickett’s team moving forward, but will the team get him some help up front?

Our expert’s Pittsburgh Steelers first pick predictions have the Steelers selecting an offensive tackle, and there are a handful of options Pittsburgh could select here; both of which could seriously bolster the protection for Pickett. Adding a franchise tackle for a young quarterback to grow with is pretty much team-building 101 for NFL franchises, as it’s one of the most expensive areas to fill on a team, and the great ones don’t touch free agency in most instances. If the Steelers draft an offensive lineman, it would mark the third consecutive offensive first round pick for Pittsburgh. The last time the Steelers drafted three straight offensive players in the first round was 2004-2006, when Pittsburgh drafted quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, tight end Heath Miller and wide receiver Santonio Holmes.

Names like Tennessee’s Darnell Wright and Georgia’s Broderick Jones would be excellent tackle prospects to target for a Steelers team that currently sports Dan Moore Jr. and Chukwuma Okorafor as their bookends on the offensive line. The Steelers have not used a first-round pick on the tackle since 1996, but the franchise’s overall success in the last quarter-century hasn’t made needing to draft a tackle in the lower third of the draft necessary. While Moore and Okorafor played every snap for Steelers in 2022, adding a franchise tackle with a first-round pick would signal their commitment to protecting their prized young quarterback for the foreseeable future.

The Steelers could also opt to shore up their secondary with a cornerback or their defensive front with their first round pick, but our expert’s Pittsburgh Steelers first pick predictions feel confident in the team selecting an offensive lineman.
