Texans Restructure Shaq Mason Contract: Salary Cap Impact?

The Houston Texans created more salary cap space with the reconstruction of Shaq Mason's contract.

The Houston Texans have created a bit more money to utilize this off-season after restructuring the contract of offensive lineman Shaq Mason.

According to ESPN's Field Yates, the Texans have restructured the contract of Mason by converting his base salary into a signing bonus, which created $6.4 million. According to TexansCap, Houston now has a projected $21.0 million in cap space.

With additional money, the Texans will continue to revamp their roster, adding depth at every position group. General manager Nick Caserio and coach DeMeco Ryans revealed their objectives at the NFL Combine in February.

The Texans have signed a pair of former first-round cornerbacks, C.J. Henderson and Jeff Okudah, to their secondary while adding a handful of defensive linemen to their front four. All-Pro defensive end Danielle Hunter remains as Houston's top signing in free agency.

"It's every position group," Ryans said. "I don't think there's one position group where I can say on our team, 'OK, we're set.' I think every position group we can enhance it; we can be better; we can play better. It was a good season, but it didn't end the way we wanted it to end. I think from that perspective, it's all about how we can add value and depth to our team in a lot of different spots."

Mason took the helm as the Texans most stable offensive lineman from the 2023 season. He appeared in all 17 games at right guard while posting an overall grade of 66.5, according to Pro Football Focus. Mason gave up three sacks and one quarterback hit in 1,132 offensive snaps played.
