Roger Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, lost to France's Jo-Wilifried Tsonga, knocking him out of the French Open. Federer was defeated in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-3.

Federer has struggled recently in other major events, but had looked solid at Roland Garros.

Federer has struggled against Tsonga at Grand Slam tournaments. From an Associated Press report:

Federer was eliminated before the semifinals for the second time in past three major events, but only the fifth time in the past nine years at a Grand Slam tournament. Tsonga was responsible for two of the losses - he also beat Federer in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 2011.
