Jaguars sign rookie safety Jonathan Cyprien

The Jaguars signed safety Jonathan Cyprien, the first pick of the second round (33rd overall) of the 2013 draft. Cyprien had an outstanding performance during minicamp and the team announced on Twitter that they had officially signed the North Miami Beach native on Tuesday afternoon.

Cyprien played for Florida International where he earned two straight second-team All-Sun Belt honors. During his senior year, Cyprien had 93 tackles (54 solo, 39 assisted) and finished second in the Sun Belt in career solo tackles (213).

Cyprien was the OTA/minicamp MVP, according to the Florida Times-Union's Ryan O'Halloran:

If an OTA/Mini-Camp MVP was announced, it would have been Cyprien in a landslide. Before fans ask, 'Why Prosinski?' – Lowery has never lasted a full season as the starter, missing three games in 2011 and seven last year. Evans has potential but the Jaguars would be asking for trouble if they started two rookies at this position. Enter Prosinski to hold down the fort, at least early in the year, if Lowery or Cyprien gets banged up.
