Liverpool Owners Celebrate Premier League Title From U.S.
Liverpool won the Premier League on June 25, ending a 30-year title drought after Chelsea beat Manchester City with a score of 2-1. Liverpool is England’s champion for the first time since 1990.
After the Chelsea win, celebrations broke out at Anfield stadium in Liverpool and at homes and bars in the area. But two people were notably absent—Liverpool’s owners, John Henry and Tom Werner. Both were in the U.S., where they are in lockdown due to the pandemic.
The duo would have had to quarantine for 14 days had they decided to travel to the U.K. for the event. Ultimately, they chose to stay in the States and celebrate the long-awaited victory from afar.
Liverpool's players celebrated from the patio of the Formby Hall Golf Resort & Spa.
“When I look back on this season, when I’m in a retirement home in 10 years, it won’t matter. I’ll just be able to reflect on an achievement," said Warner.
“There can be no disappointment in winning the Premier League!” Henry wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
As Jonathan Wilson of Sports Illustrated wrote, "With the long delay and the empty stands, the circumstances may have been weird, but that in no way diminishes the achievement."
