Once one of the fiercest rivalries in New England, Boston College (19-15) visits Providence (21-13) at Amica Mutual Pavilion on Tuesday night in the first round of the NIT. The teams haven't met since 2018 after playing at least once a season from 1946-47 through 2018-19. The Friars are a No. 3 seed in the NIT after advancing to the semifinals of the Big East Conference tournament last week. The Eagles got to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference tourney as an 11th seed. This is Providence's 21st NIT appearance and its first since 2019 and it won the tourney in both 1961 and 1963. Boston College is in the NIT for the 13th time and the first since 2018, which was also its last postseason bid. The Eagles reached the championship game in 1969.

The Friars upset then-No. 8 Creighton in the Big East quarterfinals before losing to No. 10 Marquette 79-68 in Friday's semifinal. Devin Carter scored 27 points while Jayden Pierre added 16. Carter averages 19.7 points and 8.7 rebounds while Josh Oduro scores 16.1 points per game.
Boston College dropped a 66-60 overtime decision to Virginia in the ACC quarterfinals on Friday. Quinen Post finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds and Claudell Harris Jr. contributed 14 points. Post averages 17.0 points and 8.2 boards and Harris gets 13.7 points per game.
Providence is 62-50 all-time against the Eagles and have won the last two meetings. That includes a 100-95 overtime win at BC on Dec. 4, 2018. The winner advances to play the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between UNLV and No. 2 seed Princeton on either Saturday or Sunday.
