On Tuesday night, postseason play will begin for UC Irvine and No. 2 Utah as the teams meet in the first round of the NIT tournament. The Anteaters come into tournament play with an overall record of 24-6, but came up short in the Big West championship after losing to fourth-seeded Long Beach State in an 83-79 defeat in the semifinal round of tournament play. Justin Hohn led UC Irvine with 19 points in the loss, while Pierre Crockrell II finished right behind him with 18 points. Bent Leuchten led on the boards with nine rebounds and narrowly missed a double-double as he added 10 points to the scoreboard. The team finished the game shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from beyond the arc, but it wasn't enough to beat The Beach and earn a spot in the final.

The Utes are currently 19-14 overall this season and will look to earn a first round win in the NIT in front of a home crowd at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. In the Pac-12 tournament, Utah made it past Arizona State in a big 90-57 win before having its tournament run ended by Colorado in a 72-58 loss in the quarterfinals. Branden Carlson and Hunter Erickson each finished the game with 13 points to lead the offense, while Cole Bajema joined them in double figures with 10 points. Deivon Smith and Carlson each pulled down six rebounds to lead on the boards. The team shot poorly against the Buffs, going 21-for-64 from the field and 8-for-30 from beyond the arc.
This will only be the third meeting between the two programs with the most recent dating back to 2008 when Utah won 60-52.
