The United States locked up its semifinal berth on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Italy, which at 0-2 has been eliminated from Olympic contention. Ashley Sessa got the U.S. on the board early in the second quarter with a goal and captain Ashley Hoffman converted a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter for the final margin. Kelsey Bing recorded her second straight shutout in the win.
New Zealand comes off a 3-1 loss to host India on Sunday. India, which lost 1-0 to the United States on Saturday, scored just a minute into the contest before the Kiwis tied the match on a penalty corner from Megan Hull. India responded with two goals in the final three minutes of the first period. New Zealand had beaten Italy 3-0 on Saturday.
The U.S. national team had its best Olympic finish in its first appearance in the Los Angeles Games in 1984, taking a bronze medal. It placed eighth in Seoul in 1988, fifth in Atlanta in 1996, eighth in Beijing in 2008, 12th in London in 2012 and fifth in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
