Formula 1 is back in Vegas, baby! The Las Vegas Grand Prix was added to the schedule this year and is the next-to-last race on the schedule. The first practice on the Las Vegas Strip Circuit is set for Thursday night under the lights. The course is a 3.853-mile run that starts in a former parking lot. The drivers go into a hairpin corner before hitting the streets, winding their way past Las Vegas landmarks such as Caesars Palace, the Bellagio and the Venetian. Average speeds are expected to match those at Monza in Italy, also known as F1's "Temple of Speed," so there promises to be lots of action and overtaking.

It is the first time Formula 1 is in Las Vegas since the Caesars Palace Grand Prix was run in 1981 and 1982. Alan Jones won the initial event in 1981 and Michele Alboreto topped the podium in 1982, a race that was significant as it was the last in the F1 career of Mario Andretti.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull comes to Vegas with five consecutive wins and 15 victories in his last 16 races. His last win was two weeks ago in São Paulo, where he topped Lando Norris by 8.277 seconds. He long ago clinched his third straight Formula 1 championship.
There is a battle for second place in the standings between Red Bull's Sergio Pérez and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who trails by 32 points. Hamilton fell eight points further back in São Paulo, gaining four points for his eighth-place finish while Pérez earned 12 for placing fourth.
