Shane Lowry made the turn on Thursday at Bay Hill Club and Lodge and caught fire, with a run of birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie en route to an opening-round 66 and a one-shot lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, Florida. Lowry gave back a stroke on the par-three 14th before getting it back with a birdie at the 17th. Lowry posted his first top-10 finish of the season last weekend at the Cognizant Classic with a tie for fourth and carried some momentum into Bay Hill. Lowry has two career PGA Tour wins but none since winning The Open Championship in 2019.

As a signature event, the tournament carries with it a $20 million purse, with the winner earning $3.6 million along with 700 FedExCup points. Justin Lower and Hideki Matsuyama are tied for second at five-under, a shot back, with Russell Henley, Lee Hodges, Sam Burns and Sahith Theegala at four-under-par and Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Min Woo Lee and Will Zalatoris are tied for eighth after first-round 69s.
Matsuyama won The Genesis Invitational last month before taking a couple of weeks off. That signature event victory has him in fourth place in the early FedExCup standings. Defending champion Kurt Kitayama struggled to a 78 in the first round. There are only 69 players in the field, with the cut set for the end of the second round with the top 50 and ties plus any players within 10 shots of the lead.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler opened with a 70 while Rory McIlroy, No. 2 on the Official World Golf Ranking, shot a 73.
