The six-game series between the Mets and Red Sox continues on Friday night with right-hander Brian Van Belle taking the ball for the WooSox. Van Belle is 4-3 with a 6.57 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 50.2 innings since moving up from Double-A Portland on July 7. Right-hander Mike Vasil worked into the seventh inning on Thursday for the Mets, allowing two runs on three hits and fanning 10 as Syracuse took an 8-5 victory. The Mets played long ball in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead, with Jose Peroza belting a two-run shot and Jaylen Palmer lining a solo shot over the left-field wall one out later.
Worcester trailed 8-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth before making it interesting, with RBI singles from David Hamilton and Bobby Dalbec sandwiched around a run-scoring groundout. Syracuse stopped the rally there, with the Red Sox limited to seven hits, all singles.
Any combination of losses by Worcester and wins by Durham adding up to four will eliminate the Red Sox from postseason contention in the International League.
