If the 2023 NFL playoff picture comes down to it, a potential AFC Championship game between the Bills and Chiefs will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, the league announced Thursday.

After the Week 17 Monday Night Football game between the Bengals and the Bills was canceled due to Damar Hamlin’s injury and subsequent hospitalization, NFL clubs approved a resolution that included playing the conference title game at a neutral site to mitigate the fact that teams played an unequal number of games. (Both the Bills and Chiefs had the potential to secure the No. 1 seed with a full 17-game season.)

Atlanta was designated a potential host site prior to the 2022 season, according to the league’s press release. The city is just under 800 miles from Kansas City and 900 miles from Buffalo.

The Falcons stadium has a standard capacity of 71,000 fans, making it the 11th-largest NFL stadium.

“We know, if necessary, Mercedes-Benz Stadium will provide a world class atmosphere for the competing teams, our fans and partners,” said Roger Goodell in a statement released by the NFL.
