Michigan State OC/QBs Coach Brian Lindgren Likes Outlook For Spartan QBs

Michigan State football's Brian Lindgren discussed what he likes in his quarterback room this spring.

Michigan State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren has spent the spring installing an offense designed to return the Spartans to the top of the Big Ten.

Last season, Michigan State was ranked near the bottom in almost every offensive category. Lindgren's offense at Oregon State was the opposite -- in total offense, the Beavers were ranked ahead of national champion Michigan, Alabama and Ohio State.

Lindgren knows the quarterback position is essential for his offense's success. He discussed what he liked in his new quarterback room when he spoke to the media after the Spartans' spring practice on Thursday,

"Starting with Tommy Schuster, just the experience, I think," Lindgren said. "He is just a savvy player and has a good feel for the game and made some plays in the two-minute situations. He had a really good practice on Tuesday, I think with only one incompletion."

Lindgren lauded Schuster's ability to extend plays and throw accurately on the move.

The Spartan coach also had praise for true freshmen Ryland Jessee and Alessio Milivojevic.

"I like those guys' skill sets," Lindgren said. "Ryland shows some athleticism and did some nice things in the scrimmage. I really like Alessio's arm. He has a strong arm that can push it down the field.

"Both of those guys have flashed and have done a nice job learning it for being true freshmen, I think."

Lindgren had plenty to say about Aidan Chiles -- the one quarterback in his room with a prerequisite knowledge of his offense. Last season, Chiles played for Lindgren and head coach Jonathan Smith at OSU.

"I think [regarding Chiles] a year ago you saw flashes where it's one or two big time plays and then there would be two or three mental mistakes," Lindgren said. "I have been really challenging him on consistency and we have seen it at times, but I still think that is something we are getting him to tighten up the details on as we move into the fall ... stacking those quality, well executed plays one after another."

Chiles is considered the frontrunner for the QB1 job. He was recently ranked sixth among quarterbacks in the Big Ten by College Football Report-- without playing a snap for the Green and White.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
