What Are Ollie Gordon's Heisman Trophy Odds?
One obvious direction to look at for Oklahoma State's huge midseason turnaround is Ollie Gordon. He went from taking very seldom snaps and getting few touches a game to now putting up video game numbers every week.
Through nine games, Gordon leads the nation in rushing yards. He has 1,225 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Mind you, he's done this after barely getting touches through the first three games.
When Gordon began to gain volume in touches in the Cowboys' fourth game, he essentially demanded more with his play. He was incredible and the offensive line had improved.
Now, Gordon is one of the most impactful players across the country, and he has the counting stats to back that up. Across football, running backs are respected less and less, yet Gordon is still generating some buzz to compete for the Heisman Trophy.
According to FanDuel, Gordon has +4000 odds to bring home the trophy at the end of the season. This ties him with Jalen Milroe for the eighth-best odds.
When the Cowboys took on the Oklahoma Sooners in the final Bedlam matchup, Gordon scored a touchdown and struck the Heisman pose.
After the big performance, Gordon was invited to ESPN. He was asked about a few things in the interview, one of which was about him striking the Heisman pose.
"I just had to let ‘em know,” Gordon said of hitting the pose. “Since they got a Heisman candidate on their team, we got one here, too. Just for fun."
Gordon finished the game with 137 yards on 33 touches and created even more national buzz about himself, as this was arguably the best defense Gordon and the Cowboys had seen all season.
On ESPN, Gordon was also asked about the hype and respect he's getting on the national scale, and whether or not it's enough.
“I don’t know,” Gordon said. “Probably a little more than what I’m getting, but like I said, I can’t do it without my linemen. They’re doing everything to get me there.”
Throughout the entire process, Gordon has shown so much humility and has consistently passed off praise to his blockers and teammates. He's remained humble and seems to genuinely mean it.
Who knows what Gordon's odds would look like if he was receiving a good dose of snaps from Week 1, but for him to be in this position while essentially missing those three games of stats is impressive.
