- Timberlake: The standout horse in the field, he concluded his juvenile season with starts in three Grade 1s, including a Champagne victory and an honorable fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. His regular rider is engaged in Saudi Arabia over the weekend, but nevertheless, this colt appeals as the clear form pick.
- Next Level: With seven starts under his belt, experience is on his side, and a close finish in allowance company at the local course in the last outing indicates promise. Trainer Keith Desormeaux won this race last year, but this horse was last in the Gun Runner two runs back and might be up against it again.
- Lagynos: Another likely pace angle, and although faltering in the Smarty Jones raises class questions, he is said to be working well and could be a fair price.
- Mena: A drop to claimer/starter ranks sparked improvement, but he looks outclassed in this spot.
- Just Steel: Broke his maiden at Saratoga last year and has turned in two consistent performances in the Smarty Jones and the Southwest, finishing second in both. If Timberlake had gone elsewhere, he would look the obvious winner, but with a potential star in the field, he looks booked for another runners-up berth.
- Woodcourt: A precocious two-year-old last year, but up against it with regards to both distance and class.
