AFC South Preseason Power Rankings
The AFC South has been one of the most diverse divisions in terms of winners, at least since Peyton Manning left the Indianapolis Colts for the Denver Broncos. Since then, it’s been a mix of all four teams taking the AFC South title.
Despite that, they’re one of the four divisions with a projected winner that has odds that are not plus-money. Third-year QB Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars are the clear favorites to win the AFC South after having done so last season. AFC South Predictions, Picks & Best Bets for the 2023-24 NFL Season
Right off the bat, let’s get the Texans out of the picture. Since Deshaun Watson stopped taking the field for Houston, they’ve been one of the worst teams in the NFL, and this season looks to be no different.
As for the Colts, hopes are high with #3 draft pick Anthony Richardson, but that’s more on a long-term scale. That was exemplified in his first preseason game and some poor decision-making. It also doesn’t help matters that their relationship with star RB Jonathan Taylor is spiraling downward.
On the topic of RBs, the Titans absolutely dominate in that category. Derrick ‘King’ Henry is arguably the most feared RB in the entire NFL, and head coach Mike Vrabel has learned to ride him as far as he can take them. Prior to last season, that was to back-to-back AFC South titles.
While the Jags were able to win it last year and even pull off a miraculous Wild Card playoff victory, let’s not crown them top dogs just yet. They won the division at 9-8 last year, and the two years prior they were abysmal, finishing 3-14 and 1-15. There’s no denying Lawrence is turning the franchise around, but their team overall is still very young, and therefore rather volatile.
We’re expecting a two-team race between the Titans and Jags, but ultimately, our best AFC South predictions are focused on Tennessee winning the division (+310 at FanDuel Sportsbook).
