Angels News: Halos Among 6 Teams at Throwing Session for Former All-Star Reliever

They've been linked to this reliever all offseason long.

In the seven seasons from 2014 to 2021, Zack Britton might have been the best relief pitcher in baseball. His ERA across those seven years was 1.84, and he made two All-Star teams and finished fourth in the 2015 Cy Young voting.

The last few years have been less kind to Britton. He struggled in 2021 and dealt with several injuries, the last of which was a blown-out elbow that required Tommy John surgery, ending his season after 18.1 innings and a 5.89 ERA. Britton tried to come back last year, but he made just one appearance before going back on the injured list with arm fatigue.

Britton is now a free agent, and he threw a bullpen session in Florida on Wednesday morning. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Angels were one of six teams scouting Britton's session.

The Halos bullpen posted a 3.95 ERA in 2022, and while the addition of Carlos Estevez should help, they're a team that is always on the lookout for more relievers. If Britton can regain even a semblance of his prior self, he'd be a huge addition for the team.

We haven't heard how Britton looked, though, and at age 35, it's not a sure thing that he can be a dominant reliever again even if he's fully healthy. But he has a decent platoon split in his career, being excellent against lefties and solid against righties, so it's no surprise that a handful of teams intent on contending this year are looking into him.
