WATCH: Braves turn their first triple play in 19 years in the 3rd inning against the Red Sox
It's been a strange one tonight at Fenway Park, with a bizarre double play keeping at least one Braves run off the board in the top of the first. Not to be outdone, the Atlanta defense upped the ante in the bottom of the third.
Triston Casas was hitting with men on first and second, and Charlie Morton induced a weak pop fly to shallow center. Money Mike Harris came in and made the play to record one out, but both Boston baserunners got weird reads on the ball (or just underestimated Harris' range and arm strength). Former Brave and possible Atlanta trade target Adam Duvall was the trailing runner, and he ranged way too far off first. Harris didn't even have to set his feet to easily double Duvall off.
Then Masataka Yoshida decided to make lemonade out of double-play lemons by trying to take third. But because he had to return to second base and tag up, he just didn't have any chance to reach third without the Braves completely giving him the bag. Matt Olson threw him out by half the baseline, and the first Braves triple play since 2004 was in the books, scored 8-3-5. This was apparently the franchise's 41st triple play overall, the second most in MLB history behind (shudders) the Cardinals. Despite the twin-TOOTBLANning, Boston leads 2-1.
