Mets Reportedly Add Ex-Red Sox Outfielder To Active Roster After Impressive Stint In Minors
The New York Mets reportedly added a former member of the Boston Red Sox to the big league roster Monday afternoon.
New York -- which is extremely thin in the outfield after the trade deadline and the recent loss of All-Star Starling Marte to injury -- reportedly added former Red Sox outfielder Abraham Almonte to the 26-man active roster, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.
"Outfielder Abraham Almonte has joined the Mets," DiComo said. "He had an .895 OPS at Triple-A Syracuse."
Almonte has been a journeyman throughout his big league career and has seen time with the Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Red Sox, and now likely the Mets in his 10-year Major League Baseball career. The 34-year-old appeared in just 15 games for the Red Sox last season and in that small sample size slashed .257/.297/.400 to go along with one home run and two RBIs. Almonte appeared in 32 games with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and was even more impressive with a slash line of .291/.469/.536 along with seven home runs and 24 RBIs.
The Mets signed Almonte to a minor league deal ahead of the 2023 campaign. Almonte appeared in 41 total games at the minor league level this season before being called up across the A-Level St. Lucie Mets, High-A Brooklyn Cyclones, and Triple-A Syracuse Mets. Almonte appeared in 27 games for Syracuse and clubbed 11 home runs and drove in 26 RBIs before being called up.
Almonte likely will serve in a depth role for the Mets moving forward. He's a 10-year veteran and has shown some offensive skills. New York is thin in the outfield and Almonte at least in the short term should help that out.
