MLB Analyst Gives Reds Average Grade for Frankie Montas Signing
CINCINNATI — The Reds signed right-hander Frankie Montas to a one-year, $16 million contract with a mutual option for 2025. Did they make the right decision?
ESPN MLB Senior Writer David Schoenfield gave the Reds a "C" grade for the signing.
"Those health concerns are the biggest red flag: We just don't know what Montas will offer, even if he does pass the physical," Schoenfield wrote. "He has topped 100 innings just twice in his career: in 2021 when he threw a career-high 187 innings and then in 2022 when he pitched 144 innings before the shoulder issue finally knocked him out. Before that, he had a PED suspension in 2019. Of course, the old cliché is there are no bad one-year contracts; it just feels like the going rate to sign this kind of pitcher, a guy with upside coming off an injury or a bad season, has seemingly doubled in one offseason. Is it the right kind of move for a small-market team like the Reds to gamble on?"
Nick Krall is hoping that the additions of Montas, Nick Martinez, Emilio Pagan and Jeimer Candelario give a talented young roster another boost in their quest for a National League Central Division title. We'll see if they can get it done this season.
