Could Chargers Buy Low on Former Highly-Paid Free Agent DE?
The Los Angeles Chargers finished their 2023 season with a frustrating 5-12 record on the year, giving them a top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Bolts plan to use the draft to help bolster the roster, but they could also look at some value signings that could potentially help boost their chances to be competitive next year.
The Chargers need help all across the defensive front, including at getting to the quarterback. They have Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa, but both have dealt with injury-riddled seasons of late. Mack is coming off a special year, but there is no guarantee he can duplicate his production.
One name on the open market who could be a low-risk, potentially high-reward signing is former New York Jets edge rusher, Carl Lawson. Since signing with New York in 2021, Lawson has battled through injuries, which has affected his performance on the field. The Jets voided his contract earlier this offseason, making him a free agent.
In 2022, Lawson put up 33 combined tackles and seven sacks across 17 games, He isn't the player that he once was when he was with the Cincinnati Bengals, but Lawson could still provide some value to a team on defense.
Signing him to a one-year, prove-it type of contract could be beneficial for both sides. It would give Lawson a chance to work his way into a better image around the league, while the Chargers could get another pass rusher, who is determined to get back to being dominant in the league.
This could be a pairing that works out well, especially given the way that head coach Jim Harbaugh loves to draw up defensive schemes. Lawson was one of the better pass rushers in the game just a few years ago, so the Bolts don't have much to lose.
