Key NFL Free Agents Chargers Can Target

Soon to be NFL free agents.

NFL free agency begins in just over a week on March 13, when the NFL starts its new calendar year. Prior to free agency, teams can begin speaking to players and negotiating deals with them as early as March 11.

With free agency on the horizon, many teams have been releasing players they no longer want to keep or can't afford. These moves are opening up who will become available to target, meaning the Los Angeles Chargers new regime can begin looking at some of the players they want to bring in this season.

Two of the positions that already appear to have a lot of depth on the market this season are running back and defensive backs. With Adam Schefter announcing that the New York Giants will not be tagging Saquon Barkley again, Barkley will lead an impressive group of free-agent running backs.

The list of running backs who will become free agents includes:

  • Saquon Barkley
  • Josh Jacobs
  • Derrick Henry
  • Austin Ekeler
  • Tony Pollard
  • D'Andre Swift

One of those running backs, Ekeler, has of course been with the Chargers over the last few seasons. Though there is interest in Ekeler returning, the two sides have yet to come to terms on a deal. Seeing that running back is not a highly valued position, the Chargers could target one of these players or prefer to try and draft a running back on day two or day three of the NFL Draft.

There are also plenty of defensive backs who will be available, including:

  • Safety Rayshawn Jenkins (released by Jacksonville)
  • Cornerback Darious Williams (released by Jacksonville)
  • Jamal Adams (released by Seattle)
  • Quandre Diggs (released by Seattle)
  • Kevin Byard (released by Philadelphia)

It won't be easy for the Chargers to acquire a ton of free agents or any pricey ones with their current cap situation, but with some maneuvering, the team could find room to add in a few key players.
