What Is Chlorophyll?

You may remember learning about chlorophyll way back in high school biology. It’s the green substance that plants use to make food during photosynthesis. It’s present in all green vegetables—such as broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, parsley, green beans, spinach and green peppers—as well as green marine plants like kelp and algae.

For many supplements—including ones listed above—you won’t find chlorophyll listed on the label. Instead you’ll see other green vegetables (such as broccoli), green marine plants (such as spirulina), or chlorophyllin, a semi-synthetic form of chlorophyll that contains copper.

Benefits of Chlorophyll Supplements

The research on chlorophyll is still in its infancy.

“Some studies suggest that chlorophyll supplements may help prevent cancer, treat iron deficiency anemia and clear up skin conditions like acne and sun damage,” says Catherine Karnatz, MPH, RD, creator of Nutrition Education RD in Rhode Island.

While all of that might sound amazing, these results come from studies done on animals, she says.

“That makes it difficult to translate to large human populations,” says Karnatz.

Relatively more research has been done on green foods, such as spirulina and other microalgaes. For example, a study of 30 people found that hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells) increased over 12 weeks in people who took a tablet that contained 500 milligrams of spirulina. While these results are promising, especially for people with anemia, it’s important to note: This study lacked a control group.

Other research has linked spirulina with a reduced incidence of seasonal allergy symptoms, reduced cholesterol and triglycerides, appetite regulation and reduced inflammation.

Precautions

It’s a good idea to check with your healthcare pro before taking any new supplement—and that includes greens and chlorophyll supplements.

“This is especially important if you take any medications or have ongoing health concerns,” says Kim Yawitz, RD and gym owner in St. Louis, Missouri. “For example, many greens supplements contain large amounts of vitamin K, which can make prescription blood thinners less effective.”

Another precaution: Chlorophyll supplements can make you more sensitive to sunlight.

If you have celiac disease, know that some supplements contain trace amounts of gluten, a wheat protein, as a binder. As a result, you’ll want to look for products that have been certified gluten free by NSF or another outside organization.

Though not dangerous, some reviewers of chlorophyll supplements have mentioned that the supplements can lead to green stools, says Batayneh.

How to Choose the Best Chlorophyll Supplement for You

It's important to remember that supplements aren’t regulated by the FDA.

“This means that the nutritional quality of supplements may vary substantially between manufacturing companies,” says Karnatz.

As a result, you’ll want to do some due diligence to ensure what you buy contains what’s listed on the label, without any contaminants.

To do this detective work, look for supplements that have been:

  • third-party tested for purity and potency by an outside organization like NSF, ConsumerLab, or USP.
  • certified for using good manufacturing practices (GMP).
  • certified by outside organizations that have tested to ensure the product is truly free of GMOs, gluten, pesticides, and other areas of concern. For example, the USDA stamp means the product is certified organic.

Though more research is needed, a small study published in Appetite of 38 women found that five daily grams of chlorophyll-containing plant membranes helped to boost levels of the appetite hormone GLP-1 (glucan-like peptide), thought to be important for decreasing cravings for sweets. While this is certainly promising, five grams (5,000 milligrams) is a lot of chlorophyll—roughly 50 times more than what’s available in most commercially available supplements.

How much, how often and when you take your supplement will depend on many factors. It’s best to consult your health care provider as well as follow what the manufacturer recommends on your product.

Do doctors recommend chlorophyll?

“Occasionally, I’ll recommend a greens supplement to clients struggling to get enough fruits and vegetables because of short-term challenges like travel,” Yawitz says.

Does chlorophyll stain teeth?

Chlorophyll is one of many substances (like coffee and tea) that can stain teeth. For this reason, you may want to brush your teeth after taking liquid chlorophyll supplements.

Science, unfortunately, moves slowly.

As a result, it’s too early to tell whether chlorophyll supplements will live up to the hype. More well-controlled, randomized trials are needed to sort fact from fiction, as well as to determine the optimal dose.
