Digestive issues can be more than just a nuisance–sometimes, symptoms like bloating, constipation and irregular bowel movements can be downright painful, or even impact quality of life. Whether you have irritable bowel syndrome or struggle with weight management, upping your intake of dietary fiber can help create regular bowel movements and promote a healthy gut.

Still, getting enough fiber through diet alone isn’t always feasible, which is where a supplement like ColonBroom may be helpful. ColonBroom is a fiber supplement that comes in powder form and promises to help with weight loss, body detox, energy levels, bowel movements, bloating and constipation. In other words, a wide range of issues that impact your overall gut health.

ColonBroom may sound promising, but are the benefits of ColonBroom as good as the brand claims them to be? Our in-depth ColonBroom review will dive into the supplement’s potential health benefits, side effects and overall safety, as well as what our in-house product testers experienced while trying this product. Lastly, we’ll enlist the help of registered dietitians to explain exactly how ColonBroom might work, and who this supplement is ultimately right for.

ColonBroom Claims

ColonBroom bills itself as “your new favorite fiber supplement.” It claims that more than 50 million people in the U.S. deal with constipation, though Johns Hopkins Medicine estimates that number is significantly lower at around four million. Out of those individuals, ColonBroom says it’s “helped” more than 100,000 people worldwide.

As a colon cleanser, ColonBroom promises to create a healthy digestive system by tackling a number of problems, including heaviness in your gut, constipation, imbalanced gut microbiota, difficulty in losing weight, lack of energy and bloating. By doing so, it claims to improve overall well-being by creating lightness in your gut, regular bowel movements and better weight management. The brand also recommends being patient with supplementation, as results can take two to three months.

Quality of Ingredients

ColonBroom supplement is made with just one key ingredient. Here’s how the ColonBroom ingredient works, and what a registered dietitian has to say about its dosage and benefits.

ColonBroom fact

Psyllium husk powder

As ColonBroom’s main ingredient, psyllium husk powder is a natural source of fiber derived from seeds produced by the herb Plantago ovata that essentially works as a bulk-forming laxative (helping you pass stools more easily). This soluble fiber can also help lower cholesterol levels, balance blood sugar levels and even reduce high blood pressure, which can be helpful in supporting weight loss goals.

“ColonBroom contains 3.6 grams of psyllium husk powder per serving,” says Chrissy Arsenault, RD, a registered dietitian at Trainer Academy. “The typical recommended dosage for psyllium husk to relieve constipation is around 5 grams.” Therefore, if you plan on taking ColonBroom once daily, you may not feel as much of a laxative effect, but taking the supplement twice daily could achieve the same effect, netting you a total of 6 grams of psyllium husk powder daily.

As for how psyllium husk powder actually works, Arsenault says it “absorbs water in the gut to form a gel, which then passes through your digestive system. That’s why taking ColonBroom with a full glass of water is important to maximize the effects of the psyllium husk powder. In fact, ColonBroom recommends drinking an additional glass of water after your first serving.

Nutrition Facts

Here’s a breakdown of what to expect nutrition-wise in each serving of ColonBroom.

Each bottle of ColonBroom contains 60 servings (one scoop a piece). If you plan on taking ColonBroom once daily, you can follow the nutrition facts above, otherwise double them for twice-daily supplementation. Per serving, you can expect to get 3 grams of dietary fiber content or the equivalent of 11 percent of the daily recommended value of fiber. To increase your fiber intake, you can also double your serving to achieve a little over one-fifth of the daily recommended intake of fiber. With its low-carb content, ColonBroom is suitable for a keto diet.

ColonBroom Cost

ColonBroom doesn’t run cheap. One bottle, or 60 servings, costs $69.99 on the official website or on Amazon as a one-time purchase. This amounts to $1.17 per serving for once-daily supplementation, or $2.33 for twice-daily supplementation (a one-month supply rather than a two-month). This is something to keep in mind if you plan on using ColonBroom more than once a day, as the costs can quickly add up. However, you can save a bit of money on ColonBroom with a monthly subscription, which brings the cost down to $64.99 per 60-serving bottle.

Is the high cost worth it? Depends on how ColonBroom works for you, or if you want a tastier flavored psyllium husk powder supplement. Alternatively, you can buy unflavored psyllium husk powder for a fraction of the price (depending on the brand, you may be able to buy a bag with the same amount of servings for $20 or less). You can also opt for a probiotic supplement to support your gut health, which once again, depending on the brand, may cost less.

Who Should Use ColonBroom

If you have digestive concerns such as constipation, bloating or simply want to regulate your gut microbiome (such as after taking a round of antibiotics, which can deplete both good and bad gut bacteria), ColonBroom may be helpful in balancing your gut. Arsenault also says people who struggle to maintain high-fiber diets could also benefit from the additional fiber intake that ColonBroom provides. “Ideally, individuals would get dietary fiber intake from foods [namely fruits and greens], but supplementation is helpful when that isn’t possible.”

As for ColonBroom ingredients, the product is made with just psyllium husk powder and a handful of inactive ingredients including crystallized lemon (citric acid, lemon oil and lemon juice), natural flavor and stevia leaf extract in lieu of sugar-laden sweeteners. This may make ColonBroom an attractive choice for people who follow specialty diets (like sugar-free) or prefer to take supplements with minimal ingredients.

Who Should NOT Use ColonBroom

Psyllium husk powder is well-studied for its laxative benefits, but ColonBroom still might not be a good fit for everyone dealing with constipation or other digestive tract concerns. Some people, Arsenault explains, may have a psyllium husk intolerance or allergy, which could lead to an increase in gastrointestinal symptoms. It also might not be effective for general use (i.e. for people who don’t have any symptoms) or in lieu of traditional weight loss supplements. While ColonBroom might help promote regularity, it likely won’t reduce cravings or impact appetite.

With its high price point, ColonBroom also might not be a good fit for price-conscious shoppers or people on a budget, as price per serving can easily add up, especially if you use it twice daily. Still, if you decide ColonBroom isn’t right for you after buying it, the brand offers a 14-day money-back guarantee, which is likely too short of a window to notice most potential benefits.

What Customers Are Saying About ColonBroom

We looked at ColonBroom reviews on both the official website and Amazon to get a sense of what shoppers on different platforms thought of their ColonBroom experience. Overall, most customers say ColonBroom is definitely worth it, noticing reduced bloating, improved regularity and normal bowel movements. Others report weight loss benefits, mainly from reducing constipation. “I lost 4 pounds,” one buyer writes after two weeks of use.

Still, some buyers on Amazon say ColonBroom made their symptoms worse, such as increasing constipation and creating irregular bowel movements. While the brand is open and honest that bloating may increase in the initial days following ColonBroom use since your body is “adjusting” to the increased fiber intake, some customers say the effects lingered. However, this is a small group of buyers, as most report improved “stomach issues” and pleasant fruity flavors.

About ColonBroom

ColonBroom

ColonBroom doesn’t disclose where the company is headquartered or distributed, which is something to consider if you like to know where your supplements come from. It produces two main products: ColonBroom, as mentioned here, and ColonBroom Premium Blend, which operates more as a fat burner and is designed to support appetite control. As a company, ColonBroom states its mission is to help break down barriers and erase stigma surrounding gut health and weight loss. Still, we would have liked to see more transparency on the company’s origins.

My Experience Using ColonBroom

Rachael Harris, senior editor at SI Showcase, tested ColonBroom to get a feel for the product’s taste, benefits and overall experience. Harris tried the strawberry flavor, which she says “smells like strawberry,” but isn’t an overpowering scent. As for first impressions, ColonBroom mixed easily into water using just a spoon, but left a couple chunks of residue. For a more thorough mixture, Harris recommends mixing ColonBroom with water in a designated shaker bottle.

If you’re worried about the aftertaste of the psyllium husk powder, Harris says it’s barely there. If anything, “it’s a nutty, earthy undertone” that lends itself to a pleasant taste. Since ColonBroom recommends drinking the mixed beverage immediately, followed by another full glass of water, Harris thought this was too much, as all the liquid made her feel bloated. “I don’t see myself looking forward to drinking ColonBroom like I do my morning coffee or a glass of wine, but it tasted good enough that I would use the whole container if it helped my digestion,” she explains.

However, ColonBroom did as it promised, and Harris experienced the laxative effects within 15 minutes of finishing the mixed beverage. On the flipside, she had what she calls “strawberry burps” for at least an hour after finishing ColonBroom, which she says was her “least favorite part of using the product.” Overall, Harris explains that the flavor of ColonBroom makes it more appealing than drinking plain unflavored psyllium husk powder with water, which can taste like “chunky, cold and watered-down Cream of Wheat.”

“I would also recommend ColonBroom to those who need to consume more fiber, but experience digestive issues when eating common high-fiber foods (like FODMAPs, including broccoli, apples, beans and wheat-based grains),” says Harris. “It’s also a good fit for those with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity since psyllium husk—and ColonBroom—are gluten-free.”

ColonBroom vs ColonBroom Premium Blend

ColonBroom Premium Blend is an elevated version of ColonBroom (reviewed here) that further targets weight loss and promotes appetite control. Unlike ColonBroom, which has one main ingredient (psyllium husk powder), ColonBroom Premium Blend also has very high doses of vitamins B6 and B12, plus chromium and cayenne fruit extract. ColonBroom Premium has the same price as ColonBroom ($69.99), so which product is right for you will ultimately depend on your wellness goals. If you’re seeking out gut support only, traditional ColonBroom may be enough, while those with more extensive weight loss goals may benefit from the premium blend.
