The Huskies opened last season ranked, but quickly dropped out of the poll after a non-conference loss to FCS program Montana. The team ended the season on a four-game losing streak, including a 40-13 loss to Washington State to end the season. Head coach Jimmy lake was let go after nine games.
This season, the team has a new head coach, as Kalen DeBoer takes over the program. DeBoer spent the past two seasons at Fresno State, where he led the Bulldogs to a 9-3 record last season. He's a three-time national champion in NAIA, coaching Sioux Falls to three titles in his five seasons at the helm.
The Huskies are set to start Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback this season, who joins the program after four seasons with Indiana. Penix was an ascendant talent in his first two seasons as a starter, but crashed last season. In five games, Penix completed just 53.7% of his passes with four touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Washington's success this season will rely heavily on whether Penix regains the form he showed earlier in his Hoosiers career.
The Huskies open the season against Kent State and should be in position to be 2-0 heading into their first big test on Sep. 17 against Michigan State,
Washington games this season will air on a variety of stations, including ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, FOX, FOX Sports 1 and the Pac-12 Network.
