The Pioneers have beaten the odds making it this far in the tournament as the No. 7 seed. They finished 17-16 overall this season and 6-10 against conference teams. They opened tournament play with a quarterfinal win by just one point over the No. 3-seeded Kansas City. Tommy Bruner led the team with 16 points and four assists in the win. Advancing to the semifinals, they took on and defeated the No. 6 seed, Omaha, by three points. Once again, Bruner led the team with 23 points to move his team to the championship game.

The Jackrabbits finished their season 21-12 overall and led the conference with a 12-4 record against Summit League schools finishing with a two-game lead as the No. 1 seed. They took on Oral Roberts in the quarterfinals winning 79-63 on the back of 18 points from Luke Appel.
They then beat St Thomas (MN) in the semifinals by 10 points with a team-high 13 points from Charlie Easley to advance to the championship game.
