But it’s the Cowboys and the Lions that are the heart of the tradition: with the exception of a few years, both teams have played on Thanksgiving Day each year for more than 50 years. What started as strategy by then-Detroit owner George A. Richards to attract more fans has morphed into a holiday staple that football watchers can count on each year.
