Preparations for Saturday's qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix were cut short on Friday, first by choice and then by fate. Many teams opted to use the first practice session on Friday to run young drivers to satisfy their obligation to let them take the cockpit in at least two FP1 sessions a season. With Abu Dhabi the final date on the Formula 1 schedule, there were a number of teams that had no choice but to run the kids. The second practice session was then cut short due to a pair of red flags related to incidents involving Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Niko Hülkenberg of Haas. Only one driver, Alpine's Alexander Albon, got in 20 laps during FP2.

That leaves Saturday's third practice as the last opportunity to get cars set up for qualifying later in the day. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari continued his strong runs of late with the best practice time of 1:24.809 on Friday, 0.043 seconds better than McLaren's Lando Norris and 0.173 seconds better than Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who cited steering and handling problems with his ride.
The Yas Marina Circuit is a 3.281-mile course with 16 turns, with the dominant feature being a three-quarter mile straight between Turns 5 and 6 that can be an attractive area for overtaking with its low-speed corners coming into and exiting the stretch.
Verstappen won his third straight Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last fall to close the 2022 season and enters the race with six consecutive wins, having clinched his third straight Formula 1 world title last month.
