Max Verstappen sets himself up for a big finish to the 2023 Formula 1 season by claiming the pole for Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen recovered from a shaky FP2 on Friday and captured the pole for Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final event of the Formula 1 season. Verstappen's best lap in qualifying of 1:23.445 was 0.139 seconds faster than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Oscar Piastri of McLaren qualified third but could be bounced back in the field as stewards were investigating an apparent impending incident in the closing stages of the third qualifying session. George Russell of Mercedes will start fourth and McLaren's Lando Norris is set to open in the fifth position. Mercedes and Ferrari are separated by four points in the constructor standings in the race for second place, with each team having a driver fail to reach Q3 on Saturday.

Mercedes came to the Yas Marina Circuit leading Ferrari 392-388 for second place behind the runaway express of Red Bull. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes will start 11th after failing to get out of Q2 while Ferrari's Carlos Sainz is near the back of the grid in 16th after not advancing beyond Q1.

Verstappen has already won an F1 record 18 races this season and comes in on a six-race winning streak. He also has three straight wins in Abu Dhabi. A victory on Sunday will move him past Sebastian Vettel into sole possession of third place on the all-time F1 wins list. The two are tied with 53, trailing only Hamilton's 103 and Michael Schumacher's 91.

The Dutch driver has won the last three F1 world championships, clinching this year's title with a victory in the Qatar Sprint on Oct. 7 before going out and winning the Grand Prix the following day.
