As their parent clubs battle for American League postseason spots, the Round Rock Express (88-60, 44-30) and Tacoma Rainiers (77-72, 40-34) battle at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma with the second-half title in the Pacific Coast League at stake. Round Rock enters the final day of the regular season tied with the Reno Aces for first place in the second half, but the Express need a win and a loss by the Aces to qualify for the PCL Championship Series, as Reno owns the tiebreaker. Reno's game at Las Vegas starts 90 minutes before the Express play on Sunday. Round Rock has won three straight, including a 12-10 slugfest over Tacoma on Saturday night. Davis Wendzel homered twice and Sandro Fabian also went deep for the Express. Wendzel has 29 homers on the season, one off the PCL lead.
Tacoma trailed 12-5 after six innings but mounted a late rally, scoring three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Adam Engel came to the plate as the potential tying run but flew out to end the game. No. 9 hitter Riley Unroe homered twice and had five RBI while Zach DeLoach and Isiah Gilliam also went deep.
Round Rock is the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers while the Rainiers have the Seattle Mariners as their parent club. The Express would go to Oklahoma City to face the host Dodgers, the PCL first-half winner, in the PCLCS. The best-of-three opens on Tuesday.
