The Seattle Mariners (9-12) have bounced back from a dreadful start in spring training with four straight victories and on Sunday host a split squad from the Arizona Diamondbacks (8-13) at Peoria Stadium in Arizona. The Diamondbacks broke a six-game skid on Saturday. Seattle just missed its second straight postseason appearance last year, finishing a game behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the final wild-card spot, and did some offseason housecleaning. The Mariners traded left-hander Robbie Ray, lefty Marco Gonzales, former top prospect Jarred Kelenic and third baseman Eugenio Suárez, while also letting outfielder Teoscar Hernández walk in free agency. Suárez led the American League with 214 strikeouts last season, while Hernández whiffed 211 times.
