Reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic put on a monster performance in Denver's 102–96 win against the Spurs, picking up where he left off last season. He had 32 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists in the victory.
Last season, the Nuggets gave up under 100 points 15 times, and the first time did not come until their 10th game of the season against the Knicks. While their current defensive pace is probably unsustainable, their improvement on defense has been noticeable.
The Nuggets are causing 34.9% more turnovers this season, thanks to steals, deflections and strong overall team defense. The play of Jokic on the defensive end (88.0 defensive rating) is overshadowed by his offensive impact, but he is anchoring this defense and is a major part of its success.
The Cavaliers match up well inside with Jarrett Allen, rookie Evan Mobley and Kevin Love. They also do not turn the ball over at a high rate (13.3 per game, seventh in the league) with Ricky Rubio leading the offense.
Still, it will be a big challenge for the Cavaliers to pull off the early-season upset, especially on the road in Denver.
