NBA All-Time Points Tracker: LeBron James Breaks Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Scoring Record
LeBron James officially took the No. 1 spot on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with a fadeaway basket at home against the Oklahoma City Thunder Tuesday night. The 38-year-old star scored 38 points (though he only needed 36 to pass the record) to put his career total at 38,390. That’s three points higher than Abdul-Jabbar’s total (38,387), which has stood for nearly 40 years.
Coming into his 20th season in the league—with no intention of stopping anytime soon—James was 1,325 points behind Abdul-Jabbar and has averaged just above 1,950 points per season in his career.
On Jan. 15, the Lakers superstar made history by becoming the youngest player to score 38,000 career points, joining Abdul-Jabbar as the only players to ever reach that mark.
Abdul-Jabbar has sat atop the NBA’s all-time career points leaderboard since April 1984. That same year, Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley were among the top five draft picks, and both the Kansas City Kings and New Jersey Nets were among the teams calling names. Before Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain held the points title for nearly 20 years.
James officially passed Karl Malone on March 19, 2022 to move into the No. 2 spot on the career scoring list.

James has won four NBA championships, four NBA MVP awards, four NBA Finals MVP awards.
