Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has already broken numerous records since being drafted in 2004—including most goals by a Russian-born player and most career 50-goal seasons. He shares that second title with Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky, and the Great One has already said he sees Ovechkin eventually breaking his goals record. But first, Ovechkin had to surpass "Mr. Hockey" himself: Detroit Red Wings great Gordie Howe.
Howe, who netted 801 goals by the time he officially retired in 1980, was the NHL's leading scorer until 1994, when Gretzky scored his 802nd goal.
Ovechkin became the third player to net 800 goals following a hat trick against the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 13. On Dec. 23, Ovechkin scored his 801st and 802nd goals, officially surpassing Howe—he still has a long way to go before unseating Gretzky, however.
