The road to the 2022 Winter Olympics in curling continues Saturday with an Olympic qualifying competition.

Curling debuted at the 1924 Winter Olympics but disappeared from the program for nearly 100 years before returning in 1998. Since then, the sport has grown into a fan favorite, and on Saturday competitors will take to the ice for the semifinals of an Olympic qualifying competition.

Today’s event features mixed doubles competition in preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Vicky Persinger and Chris Plys, defending U.S. national champions, along with Sarah Anderson and Korey Dropkin, are 5–2 so far. Cory Christensen and John Shuster are 4–3.

In the 2018 Winter Olympics, the United States won gold on the men’s side, Sweden won gold in the women’s competition and silver in the men's competition. Switzerland won bronze in the men's competition and silver in mixed doubles.

Canada (11 total medals, six gold) has the most medals in curling at the Olympics, with Sweden not far behind with eight total medals (three gold).

Mixed doubles is a relatively new addition to curling at the Olympics, with Canada (gold), Switzerland (silver) and Norway (bronze) medaling in the inaugural event in 2018.
