Jean-Louis Gasset will attempt to extend his remarkable transformation of Marseille’s fortunes on Sunday when the Ligue 1 giant hosts Nantes in search of a fifth straight win across all competitions. Les Olympiens had gone without a win in seven and were watching their chances of European qualification fade before their eyes when they parted ways with predecessor Gennaro Gattuso in mid-February. But replacement Gasset has been a breath of fresh air and is yet to step a foot wrong at the helm, with Marseille looking to extend a run of seven straight clashes against Nantes without suffering a loss.

Despite it looking like this season’s prospects were fading fast under Gattuso, Marseille is still just six points off third place in Ligue 1 and still in with a chance of landing a place in next term’s Champions League.
Nantes has a different kind of battle on its hands as the club sits 14th in the table and only one point off the relegation play-off place, with its fate for next season still far from sealed.
La Maison Jaune drew 1-1 at home to Marseille back in September but hasn’t won in this fixture since 2020, which just so happened to be its last win at the Velodrome.
That being said, Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side have won two in succession on the road after months without a lick of success on their travels.
And they’ll need every bit of positive morale they can muster considering Marseille has won three in a row at home and appears to have discovered a new gear under Gasset.
Most notable is the improvements in attack, with the club netting at least three times in each of its four outings under Gasset, bagging 16 goals in those games alone.
To put those numbers into context, Marseille hadn’t even scored that many in its 12 previous matches leading up to Gattuso’s exit.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks particularly pleased by the change in leadership after scoring six times thus far under the Gasset regime, including a brace in Thursday’s 4-0 annihilation of Villarreal.
