Richmond (23-9) shared the Atlantic 10 regular-season title this season before getting caught up in the carnage of the conference tournament last week, where none of the top five seeds advanced beyond the quarterfinals. As a result, the Spiders landed in the NIT, where they will visit No. 3 seed Virginia Tech (18-14) in a first-round game as Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg on Tuesday night. It is the second straight NIT bid for the Hokies, who lost in the first round to Cincinnati last year. They won the tournament in both 1973 and 1995 and are in the field for the 15th time. Richmond is in the NIT for the 12th time in program history and the first since 2021. It has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals.
