The tournament record of 13-under-par set by Minjee Lee in 2016 is in danger while the 26-year-old Ko can earn automatic qualification for the LPGA Hall of Fame with a victory on Sunday. Schmelzer shot a 69 on Saturday to retain her share of the lead while second-round co-leader Narin An plunged down the leaderboard after a third-round 76.
The leading trio is two shots ahead of China's Ruixin Liu, bidding to become the second player to win on home soil after Shanshan Feng won at Blue Bay in 2017. Savannah Grewal had the low round of the day on Saturday with an eight-under 64 to move into a tie for fifth with Lee. Sei Young Kim, Stephanie Meadow and Esther Henseleit are tied for seventh, four shots off the pace, while Ayaka Furue and Hey-Jin Choi are knotted in ninth at seven-under-par.
The winner earns $330,000 and 500 Race to the CME Globe points.
