Benton (32-3) advanced to its first Illinois state championship game with a semifinal win on Thursday and now takes on Chicago Phillips Academy (24-9) on Saturday at State Farm Arena in Champaign for the 2A title. The Rangers, ranked fifth in the final Illinois Associated Press poll, have won 19 straight games while the Wildcats have won their last six. Both teams were No. 1 seeds at the regional level with Benton's toughest test coming in the sectional finals with a two-point victory over Breese Central. Phillips had its closest call in Thursday's semifinal victory over Williamsville, which advanced to state as a No. 5 regional seed.

Isaac Billington had a game-high 18 points and Docker Tedeschi finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots to lift Benton past Byron 50-42 in Thursday's semifinal matchup. Byron made a run and took a brief lead early in the fourth quarter before the Rangers got the advantage back for good.
Phillips had a 12-point lead with 6:27 to go against Williamsville on Thursday but had to hold off a late push for a 60-56 victory. EJ Horton punctuated the victory with a dunk in the closing seconds and finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Wildcats. Phoenix Childs had led Phillips with 21 points.
While it is Byron's first championship game appearance, the Wildcats are back in the final for the first time since winning the 2A state title in 1975.
