Hermantown (19-8-2) roared back to its fifth straight appearance in the Minnesota Class A state tournament as the No. 1-ranked team in the state and the No. 1 seed. On Friday afternoon, the Hawks take on Mahtomedi (18-11-0) in a matchup of the last two state champions. The Zephyrs made their third straight trip to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul and both teams come off convincing quarterfinal victories on Wednesday. The teams met on Dec. 16 in Hermantown, with the Hawks skating to a lopsided 5-1 win. Mahtomedi, seeded fourth at state, won the Section 4 championship as the top seed while Hermantown dominated the Section 7 tournament, outscoring its three opponents by a combined 24-3.

The Hawks blanked Alexandria Area 6-0 in their Wednesday quarterfinal matchup, breaking the game open with three goals in the second period. Dane Callaway made 16 saves to get the shutout while Henry Peterson finished with two games and two assists and River Freeman added a goal and two helpers.

The Zephyrs trailed 2-1 with 8:15 remaining before coming back with two goals in 18 seconds to take a 3-2 lead before icing the game with a pair of empty-net markers in a 5-2 victory over Orono on Wednesday. Gene Wegleitner's unassisted goal at 11:11 of the third was the difference maker after Jake Hodd-Chlebeck tied the game. Hodd-Chlebeck added one of the empty-net goals.

Freeman leads Hermantown with 20 goals and 44 points while Callaway now has six shutouts and is 19-8-2 with a .939 save percentage and 1.69 goals-against average. Hodd-Chlebeck has 27 goals and 49 points for Mahtomedi and Charlie Brandt is 11-6-0 with an .899 save percentage and 3.16 GAA. He got the win on Wednesday.

The winner takes on the victor of the earlier semifinal between third-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral and No. 2 seed Warroad in Saturday's championship game.
