The Detroit Tigers (9-7) hit the road on Monday, visiting CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches for a Grapefruit League contest with the Houston Astros (8-7) in Palm Beach, Florida. Houston right-hander Justin Verlander worked a 60-pitch bullpen session on Friday but is still slated to open the season on the injured list with discomfort in his right shoulder. The Astros sent right-hander Forrest Whitley, a 25-year-old who was their first-round pick in 2016, to Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday. He was limited to eight appearances at Triple-A last season due to injuries. The Tigers are getting a huge spring from infielder Andy Ibañez, who has four home runs in Florida.

Detroit pushed across two runs in the eighth inning on a single, double and a throwing error to beat the New York Mets on Sunday 3-2. Jace Jung drove in the go-ahead run with a base hit through the left side of the infield before scoring on an error after Bligh Madris' double. Left-hander Brant Hurter allowed a run on two hits in his first spring start.
Houston was blanked by a split squad from the Miami Marlins 3-0 on Sunday, mustering just six hits. Former closer Ryan Pressly took the loss, surrendering a homer to Trey Mancini in the second inning. He has been pushed into a setup role after the Astros committed $95 million over five years to All-Star closer Josh Hader.
Left-hander Framber Valdez gets the ball for the second time this spring on Monday for Houston. He was touched up for three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings his first time out. Right-hander Reese Olson makes his fourth start in Florida for the Tigers. He has allowed four runs in 6.2 innings so far.
