About 40 percent of adults worldwide have GI issues including constipation, bloating, diarrhea and general discomfort. Other common digestive health discomforts include irritable bowel diseases (such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis)  and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In many of these cases, general diet, poor lifestyle habits and nutritional deficiencies serve as potential causes.

To help support digestive health and improve gut health, the number of probiotic supplements available is only growing. Some products are specific probiotics made for men, others are formulated for women but the big question is: Do they work?

As someone with Crohn’s disease, I am pretty familiar with how probiotic and prebiotic supplements are supposed to work. For this article, I tested Swolverine Probiotix for two weeks to see whether it helped me. Spoiler alert: It did. I've detailed everything you need to know about Swolverine, the Probiotix product, what each ingredient does and what my experience was with it below.

Swolverine Probiotix Claims

According to Swolverine, Probiotix helps you balance your gut bacteria which gives you better digestive health. The bacteria strains in Probiotix are “good” gut bacteria that help your body absorb nutrients, get rid of toxins from your food, relieve digestive symptoms like diarrhea and upset stomach and boost your immune system.

DE111® (Bacillus subtilis)

Bacillus subtilis is a bacteria strain that research suggests survives longer in human digestive tracts. That is important because the longer a bacteria strain can survive, the better its chances of colonizing and having positive effects on your digestive health. DE111® is a trademarked form of Bacillus subtilis that has been used in a few small studies. One study showed an increase in anti-inflammatory cells after using five billion CFUS DE111® for four weeks, however, Probiotix does not indicate exactly how many CFUs of each strain are in the formula.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

According to Swolverine, Lactobacillus rhamnosus can boost your immune system, reduce harmful bacteria and support the lining of your digestive and urinary tracts. I was able to find limited evidence to support these claims. One study did show that supplementing Lactobacillus rhamnosus can increase good immune cell production. However, that study was only in mice, not humans.

Even so, there is evidence to suggest that Lactobacillus rhamnosus can attach to your digestive tract lining and provide a barrier that passes harmful bacteria through the tract. Basically, harmful bacteria can’t attach to your gut because Lactobacillus rhamnosus blocks it from attaching and being absorbed by your body. More studies need to be done, but these initial results are promising.

Lactobacillus casei

Lactobacillus casei has a number of documented benefits. It reduces the severity of diarrhea from inflammation and antibiotics (although the best results were shown among children). It also fights inflammatory joint damage from arthritis. However, most impressively in my opinion, it lowers fasting glucose levels by 35 percent and insulin levels by 28 percent.

Like the other ingredients, Swolverine doesn’t indicate exactly how many CFUs of Lactobacillus casei are included in the 5.75 billion CFU total, but either way the Lactobacillus casei content is lower than the 10 billion CFU effective dose.

Bifidobacterium longum

Bifidobacterium longum is a multi-strain bacteria from the Bifidobacterium family. Initial studies of this family of bacteria show potential antiinfection, antiinflammatory and anticancer benefits, while also regulating your immune system. In one small study, Bifidobacterium strains can also provide some psychological benefits like reducing stress hormones and boosting memory.

Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a bacterial strain that can help with symptoms from many different gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. Studies show that this bacteria can help relieve symptoms like acute diarrhea and upset stomach from inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis) and digestive function disorders like IBS.

Lactobacillus plantarum

Lactobacillus plantarum is a resistant bacterial strain that can survive consistent antibiotic treatment and help prevent yeast overgrowth—the source of many stomach problems during and after taking antibiotics).

Bifidobacterium breve

Bifodobacterium breve has more potential benefits than most other bacterial strains on the list. This bacteria can lower cholesterol and help your body burn fat for energy, improve brain function as part of a treatment for Alzhiemer’s disease, help balance brain hormones in those with depression while relieving GI symptoms associated with depression and provide protection against pathogens that would enter your body through the GI tract.

Other ingredients

The only other ingredients in Swolverine Probiotix are the ones that make up the vegetable capsule: vegetable cellulose, maltodextrin, medium chain triglycerides.

Swolverine Probiotix Cost

A one-time purchase of Swolverine Probiotix is $32.99 for 60 servings. That averages about $0.55 per capsule serving. Plus, you can save 15% when you sign up for a subscription, which can bring your cost down to about $0.47 per capsule serving.

You’ll notice that Swolverine Probiotix costs much less than other premium brands that Swolverine Products usually compete with (like Transparent Labs Probiotics and Ritual Synbiotic+). I’ll do a comparison in a later section so that you can get a sense of the differences.

Who Should Use Swolverine Probiotix

The bacterial strains in Swolverine Probiotix are some of the most common strains that you’ll also find in other probiotic products. In that sense, they should be appropriate for anyone who is suffering from consistent GI problems like IBS, acute diarrhea, upset stomach or similar symptoms.

I have Crohn’s disease, and I had noticeable relief from the minor symptoms associated with Crohn’s (like nausea) while I was taking Probiotix. I’m consulting with my doctor about long-term use as part of my treatment plan, so if you suffer from an IBD too, Probiotix might be a good option to try.

Who Should NOT Use Swolverine Probiotix

If you have severe GI symptoms you may want to look for a more concentrated probiotic with higher CFUs. Probiotix is great in my experience, but it is best used as a supplement alongside other gut-balancing strategies because of the low amount of CFUs.

What Customers Are Saying About Swolverine Probiotix

Probiotix has 20 reviews on Swolverine’s website, three reviews on Amazon and 16 reviews on GNC. All of the reviews across these websites are 5/5 stars. The most common thing people love about this probiotic supplement is that it works, and it works fast. According to reviewer Cindy Muckridge—who has been using Probiotix for one year—”after only two weeks, I began to see improvement and that has continued to the point I rely on my shipment every month.”

The only complaint I’ve seen on other reviews and experienced myself is the smell when you open the package.

Swolverine Probiotix vs. Transparent Labs Probiotic

Transparent Labs probiotic is very comparable to Probiotix because it contains many of the same ingredients. However, a major difference between Transparent Labs probiotic and Swolverine Probiotix is the CFU count. Transparent Labs has 100 billion CFUs per serving compared to Probiotix 5.75 billion. That is a significant difference, but is it necessary?

According to research, between one and 10 billion CFU is effective to relieve common GI symptoms, but if you have an IBD (Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis) then 100 billion CFU is most effective. Bottom line: Swolverine Probiotix is suitable for normal relief while Transparent Labs may be a better option for more serious conditions like IBD.

Swolverine Probiotix vs. Ritual Synbiotic+

Ritual Synbiotic+ is another comparable probiotic supplement. Synbiotic+ has 11 billion CFU compared to the 5.75 billion in Probiotix, but Synbiotic+ only has two bacteria strains:

BB-12® & LGG®. However, one thing Synbiotic+ contains that Probiotix does not is prebiotics (natural fibers that feed probiotic bacteria and help it grow faster in your gut).

Bottom line: Swolverine Probiotix has a larger variety of bacteria which could treat a wider range of symptoms while Ritual Synbiotic+ has a more concentrated dose of bacteria along with prebiotics to help sustain long-term gut health.

Swolverine Probiotix FAQs

What probiotic strain helps with weight loss?

Research shows that using probiotic strains from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium families had the best results as part of a weight loss program. Swolverine Probiotix has six strains from these two families.

Can probiotics boost serotonin?

Yes. Doctors have found a link between gut health and brain function called the gut-brain axis. Basically, your gut also produces neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine which help regulate mood.

What is the best amount of probiotics to take daily?

For common GI symptoms like diarrhea, bloating, discomfort and gas it is recommended to take between one and 10 billion CFU of probiotics daily. For more severe GI diseases like IBD, you should consult your doctor or healthcare professional.

Do probiotics heal inflammation?

There is no definitive proof yet, but initial results from studies suggest that yes, probiotics can boost your immune system and produce anti-inflammatory cells that heal inflammation in your body.

When should you take probiotics?

You should take a probiotic about 30 minutes before a meal. Research suggests that 30 minutes before a meal is the optimal time while waiting 30 minutes after a meal greatly reduces the amount of probiotics that survive the digestive process.

Takeaway: Is Swolverine Probiotix Worth It?

My personal experience with Probiotix was very positive, and I would say it is more than worth the price for anyone who suffers from GI problems. If you take one serving per day, Probiotix is far cheaper than brands of similar quality, plus you can take up to three servings per day if you need a stronger dose.
