UConn (28-3) rolled into the Big East Conference tournament with the regular season title, the No. 1 seed locked up and a four-game winning streak under its belt. On Thursday, the Huskies open play at Madison Square Garden against ninth-seeded Xavier (16-16), which held off Butler in a first round game on Wednesday. UConn, the defending national champion, is looking to become the first team to repeat since Florida in 2006 and 2007. It has reached three consecutive NCAA tournaments. The Musketeers, who went to the Sweet Sixteen last season, will need to win the Big East tournament title to make a repeat trip to March Madness.

Xavier took the lead for good when Quincy Olivari knocked down a three-pointer with 11:12 remaining in the game and held off Butler down the stretch for a 76-72 victory in its first round game on Wednesday. Desmond Claude scored 26 points, while Dayvion McKnight finished with 20 points and four steals. Olivari gets 19.5 points per game, Claude puts in 16.3 points a night and Abou Ousmane averages 6.4 rebounds.
The Huskies closed out the regular season on Saturday night with a 74-60 win at Providence. Alex Karaban had 16 points and Stephon Castle added 14 in the victory. Tristen Newton averages 15.0 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists while Cam Spencer knocks down 14.7 points per game.
UConn took a 5-4 lead in the all-time series with the Musketeers by winning both regular season matchups this season. The Huskies won at Cincinnati 80-75 on Jan. 10 before clobbering Xavier 99-56 in Hartford on Jan. 28.
