In the quarterfinals the Falcons won 66-56 over fourth-seeded Central Michigan to make it to the semifinals while the Golden Flashes upset top-seeded Toledo 67-59 to earn their way to this game.
During the regular season the teams played just one time with the Golden Flashes winning. In the overtime win the Golden Flashes and Falcons were tied at the half (35-35) and then at the end of the second (74) to send the game to extra time. Jalen Sullinger led all scorers with 30 points while Voncameron Davies added 21 points and 10 rebounds in the thriller.
For the Falcons, they finished with four players in double-figures and all five starters scoring at least nine points. Marcus Hill led the team with 21 points, eight rebounds and three assists going 9-10 from the free-throw line. Jason Spurgin (19 points and nine rebounds), Rashaun Agee (17 points and 10 rebounds) and Trey Thomas (12 points) all finished in double-figures scoring in the loss.
