The 12th annual Darius Rucker Intercollegiate golf tournament gets started today from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. This year South Carolina plays host to the event that features 17 overall women’s college golf teams all looking to come away with a huge tournament win. This is one of the most prestigious and longest-running events in women’s college golf. The field this year features the Gamecocks, along with 11 of the Top 25 ranked teams in the country and six of the current top 10 in the rankings. Winning this event will give a program the momentum to eventually contend for the National Championship later this year.

Last year the Tigers took home the team championship after outlasting the rest of the field. In the individual competition, the Gamecocks Mathilde Claisse stood out as the best overall golfer.
Also in the field are Alabama, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Duke, Georgia, Kentucky, the defending champion Tigers, Mississippi State, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest. That group is primarily built up with traditional SEC schools, but also brings in other programs from all over the country to compete.
Among those teams, the Buckeyes are the only first-time competitors at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and the (Mississippi State) Bulldogs are returning after an absence from the tournament last year. Those two teams and every other will look to overcome the host team and defending champions to come out on top this week starting today.
