The 2024 season began the same way the previous one did — with Max Verstappen of Red Bull starting from the pole for the Bahrain Grand Prix. Verstappen, coming off his third consecutive Formula 1 championship, roared to a best lap of 1:29.179 during Friday's qualifying runs, more than a half-second faster than his qualifying time a year ago, and will start Saturday's race at the front of the grid. Alongside will be Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who was 0.228 seconds slower on Friday. The Bahrain International Circuit opened in 2004 and promises decent amounts of passing. Drivers have to deal with wind and racing under the lights while dealing with extreme temperature changes.

The course itself is 3.363 miles with 15 turns with a surface of graywacke aggregate that was shipped from a quarry in Shropshire, England. The race lap record of 1:31.447 dates to 2005 by McLaren driver Pedro de la Rosa.
Teams spent the offseason and testing period looking for ways to catch up with Verstappen and Red Bull, which won a staggering 21 of 22 races last season. Verstappen set a new record with 16 victories while teammate Sergio Pérez topped four podiums. The only non-Red Bull winner last season was Carlos Sainz of Ferrari in Singapore last September.
For the first time in its history, Formula 1 enters a new season with its driver lineup unchanged from the previous year. One change for 2025 has already been announced, however, as seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton will leave Mercedes at season's end to replace Sainz at Ferrari.
