The third time was the charm for Albany/Monticello (25-3), the fourth-seed at the Wisconsin Division 5 state tournament, which beat top-seeded Argyle/Pecatonica on Friday for the first time in three meetings this season. The Comets advanced to Saturday's state championship game against No. 2 seed Lena (28-2) at the Resch Center in Green Bay. The Wildcats advanced with a win over third-seeded Clear Lake on Friday. Lena is in the state tournament for the fourth time, having won the championship in 1980 and losing in the 1991 final. Albany/Monticello is at state for the second consecutive year but lost in the semifinals to eventual state champion Chippewa Falls McDonell Catholic. This is the Comets' first appearance as part of a co-op with Monticello, which won the state title in 1991.

Albany/Monticello survived 19 turnovers and 27.3% shooting to advance with a 37-31 victory as the Orioles shot even more poorly at 23.3% for the game. The game was tied eight times and there were eight lead changes, with the Comets pulling away from a tie game at the half. Abby Hollis scored nine points to lead Albany/Monticello.

In their semifinal, the Wildcats outscored Clear Lake 26-12 in the paint and got 20 points off 24 turnovers in a 53-48 win. Eva Brooks finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds, six steals and four blocked shots and Madi Thomson chipped in with 12 points and 11 boards.

Lena, got to Green Bay with a 66-57 sectional final win over Pittsfield on Saturday while the Comets took the Section 4 crown in a 47-45 nailbiter over Assumption in the sectional championship game on Saturday.
